NHS Digital, TPP and Dorset County Hospital working with Independent Systems Integrators have succeeded in achieving First of Type to send secure and standardised clinical patient discharge summaries and outpatient attendance information electronically to GP systems.
Using the Clinical Document Gateway solution, Dorset County Hospital was able to send over 4,000 structured FHIR messages between May and September 2020 to four volunteer GP practices locally, including outpatient letters, emergency care and inpatient discharge summaries.
Outpatient attendance letters were generated in MS Word and sent as rich text format and office .doc files. The Clinical Document Gateway uses content from the letters to populate the different sections of the FHIR document. ED attendance and Inpatient discharges were generated based on HL7v2 messages from the source systems enriched with additional data held in diferent systems.
Independent SI has obtained NHS Digital ITK middleware certification as an ITK3 Sender for the in place offering a proven route to production.
